The
Wednesday meeting between Senate Committee and high ranking official of the NRA
seems to be heading towards the same old story that has been heard so far. NRA
officials are of the firm view that curbing gun owners via strict laws will not
solve the problem. President Obama seems keen on reforms but there are many
obstacles on the path. But there are merits in the points that mental health
system prevalent in the country must be improved, so that we don’t have situations
where guns and firearms are coming in the possession of those who are simple
not in the position of understanding the meaning of responsibility.
The title
of this hearing is “What Should America Do About Gun Violence?”. NRA has to the
tune of 4.5 million active members and one can understand that numbers are
impressive supporting the point of gun-rights. What seems likely is that the
ban on sophisticated automatic weapons, magazines will be renewed. Background
checks are likely to get tougher. But there are several political and global
issues standing right in front of the Republican controlled house. A laser beam
intent on eradicating the problems associated with the prevalent gun culture
seems to be missing.
